6. Sunday 50 Over Issues

The Sunday 50 Over comp has been running well for two seasons. The emphasis is on simple rules and provides a keen competition on a Sunday for players who just aren;t satisfied with a Saturday afternoon. It is also providing a useful way to utilise club facilities (pitches, canteens, practice nets etc etc).

There are a few little issues which need a tweak.

(a) Use Net Run Rate instead of Bonus Points (Sun Reg 26)
The major limited over competitions (including the 2019 World Cup) all use Net Run rate to split teams on the same points. This formula spreads the competition points a little more fairly than bonus points since it applies to every run scored for and against no matter what the result.

Here's an illustration of how it works.   From http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/page/429305.html
Let's take as an example South Africa's net run-rate in the 1999 World Cup.

South Africa's listing in the Group A points table published in the group stages was as follows:

P
W
L
NR
T
Pts
Net-RR
For
Against
South Africa
3
3
-
-
-
6
+1.495
678/147.2
466/150

The columns we are looking at here are the last three: "Net-RR", "For" and "Against". The figure in the "Net-RR" column is achieved by subtracting the answer of the division in the "Against" column from the answer to the division in the "For" column.

FOR South Africa had scored, so far in the tournament:
  • Against India, 254 runs (for 6 wkts) from 47.2 overs
  • Against Sri Lanka, 199 runs (for 9 wkts) from 50 overs
  • Against England, 225 runs (for 7 wkts) from 50 overs
Across the three games, South Africa scored 678 runs in a total of 147 overs and 2 balls (actually 147.333 overs), a rate of 678/147.333 or 4.602 rpo.

AGAINST  Teams opposing South Africa scored:
  • India, 253 (for 5 wkts) from 50 overs.
  • Sri Lanka, 110 all out from 35.2 overs.
  • England, 103 all out from 41 overs.
In the case of Sri Lanka and England, because they were all out before their allotted 50 overs expired, the run rate is calculated as if they had scored their runs over the full 50 overs.

Therefore, the run-rate scored against South Africa across the first three games is calculated on the basis of 466 runs in a total of 50 + 50 + 50 = 150 overs, a rate of 466/150 or 3.107 rpo.

NET-RR The net run-rate is, therefore,  Run-rate for - Run-rate against  = 4.602 - 3.107 = + 1.495

In QSDCA we already collect that data in MyCricket.

  • There is already a rule that defines net run rate in Sunday 50 regulations.
  • There is a numbering issue to fix and regulations 26.3.3 and 26.3.4 are not relevant to Net Run rate and should be moved elsewhere. See proposal in 8. New Numbering...
  • A reorder of determining factors is needed in regulation 27.3

  • We can wipe the bonus points regulations.
  • But what should we do about the Super Bonus Point? (which was only introduced last season...) If not then delete 26.2.1 and 26.2.2....

(b) Extend playing time for First innings by a few minutes (Sun Reg 13)

The playing hours were determined without much thought when we did it two years back. It has become a minor problem in that time that the team batting first quite frequently does not bat out 50 overs but when they do the innings is often curtailed by bowling team failing to get to 50 overs by cut off time of 1.15pm.

At the core of this is the fact that the Hours of Play are 10am to 1.15pm. This provides exactly 195 minutes for the 50 overs. Our other competitions on Saturday are based on 4 minutes an over.
If we changed Hours of Play to 10-1.20pm, then 30 minutes lunch, 1.50pm to 5.10pm, each side would be allowed exactly 200 minutes each to bowl their 50 overs.

OLD REGULATION PROPOSED NEW WORDING
13. HOURS OF PLAY 13. HOURS OF PLAY
13.1 Morning Session 10.00 am to 1.15 pm. 13.1 Morning Session 10.00 am to 1.20 pm.
13.2 Interval 1.15 pm to 1.45 pm. 13.2 Interval 1.20 pm. to 1.50 pm.
13.3 Afternoon Session 1.45 pm to 5.00 pm. 13.3 Afternoon Session 1.50 pm to 5.10 pm.

(Numbering subject to change with proposal in 8. New Numbering...)

(c) Introduce an actual penalty for slow over rates (especially in first innings)

If we allow a little extra time for the 50 overs then a quid pro quo would be to introduce a penalty for bowling the overs too slow. Main problem is what would it be?

Not many people have expressed support for this idea, so I might leave it there.

(d) Revise and add the "Super Sub" Rule (Sun Reg 7.14)

Last season we introduce an experimental super sub rule from Round 2 onward. Despite some initial fears that it might be against some people's idea of fairness the teams embraced this one and used it to great advantage.

The basic idea is to allow a rule where a player in the initial team 11 named before the toss of the coin can be replaced by a named before the toss 12th man at whatever tactical point in the match seems most advantageous.

The ideal progress of this would be name 11 with an extra batsman and a non-batting bowler as Super Sub, win the toss, bat, then switch for the super sub bowler at innings change and bowl for victory.

Of course that might go completely awry if you lose the toss... but that's cricket I guess.

Here's the text of last year's provisional regulation... with suggested edits.

  1. I just want one point to note about Sunday 50 Over Cricket maybe we cut the Lunch Break to 20 mins instead of 30 mins. Most players I know grumble about this one all the time.

I know when I'm playing these matches the 30 minutes seems to be a really long dragged out time. You can pretty much come off have something to eat and freshen up and be ready to bat in 20 minutes easily.

It also gives people less opportunity to "go somewhere else to get lunch" and I do prefer finishing games by 5pm.

It is a long day and the earlier we can finish the matches the better in my opinion.

    For consideration.

    1. Hi Keane,
So that would need a modification to proposal 6b to say interval 1.20p to 1.40p, arvo session 1.40p to 5p.

      It's not too late.. . :-)

    2. You might have to edit the lost time provisions in the regs as well also because I think they talk about changes to the breaks times as well when overs are lost.

    4. So add a new 13.4...
      How about?
13.4 When playing time is lost the length of the interval will vary as follows.
Time Lost .. up to 60 mins ..More than 60 mins
      Interval .. 20 minutes .. 10 minutes

  2. Poor old umpires

Checking scores etc plus the umpires are the first to get back on to the field and the last to leave the field

Then we have to answer various question and sort out any issues etc

This equates to about 10 minutes – so a 20 minute lunch break comes back to 10 minutes.

Remember that the umpires are on the field for the whole day – not just a small part of the day
